Abstract
Noradrenergic locus coeruleus (LC) efferents to the forebrain suppress seiz ures in several models of epilepsy. Using in situ hybridization, we demonst rate that tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and norepinephrine transporter (NET) bu t not vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2) mRNA levels an transiently elevated in LC neurons following kainic acid-induced status epilepticus. Th ese increases of TH and NET mRNAs and presumably of the proteins themselves might enhance synthesis and reuptake of NE postictally. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
