The paper presents two theoretical and two experimental investigations into
the vibration of three varying thickness thin-walled steel circular cylind
ers, One of the investigations was in air and the other was while the vesse
ls were subjected to various values of external water pressure, The theoret
ical analyses were carried out using the finite element method for both of
the theoretical investigations. In the case of the theoretical underwater v
ibration investigation, the water motion was also mathematically meddled us
ing the finite element method, Comparison between experiment and theory was
excellent for the in-air investigation and very good for the in-water inve
stigation. (C) 1999 Civil-Comp Ltd and Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights res
