In this paper a comparative study of different algorithms is provided for n
odal and element ordering of finite element models. The matrix force method
of structures is presented for in-plant force systems of three-node triang
ular and four-node rectangular plane stress elements. Ordering algorithms f
or rectangular matrices are incorporated into the turn-back approach and th
e bandwidth and sparsity of self stress and flexibility matrices are compar
ed through many examples. This comparison is made for plane stress finite e
