Abstract
It is shown that phospham is an efficient fire retardant additive to polyam ide 6 because it promotes charring of the polymer. In spite of high thermal stability, phospham reacts with the polyamide producing phosphonitriles an d phosphoamines which decompose at higher temperature and give char. The fl ee radical mechanism is suggested to contribute to the charring.
