Abstract
A compact bar code reader using pre-lens scanning by a piezoelectrically-ac tuated vibrating optical fibre cantilever is demonstrated. Dual numerical a perture confocal operation, based on transmission of a guided mode and rece ption of cladding modes, is shown to be a simple method for increasing and separating the return signal.
