Electricity generation in Jordan is among the largest sectors of energy con
sumption of primary energy. The electricity audit at hand is a case study w
ith the objective of identifying the major areas of electricity consumption
of the different income groups of the population of Amman. The approach us
ed in the case study can also be useful to other developing countries. Comf
ort conditioning (26%), food reservation (19.1%), illumination (19%), and w
ater heating (13.1%) are found to be the leading sectors of electricity con
sumption. The potential of benefitting from available renewable energy reso
urces to alleviate electricity consumption is discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier
