The phase formation and microstructures of Sm-Fe alloys have been investiga
ted at Sm levels of 11 and 17 atomic percent and with alloying additions of
Ti and C. At lower Sm content, virtually phase pure SmFe7 formed, while hi
gher Sm content resulted in the formation of SmFe7, SmFe2 and amorphous pha
ses. The addition of Ti and C resulted in greater stability and a larger vo
lume fraction of the amorphous phase. The binary Sm-Fe alloys at both Sm le
vels had tremendously variable microstructures, with large discrepancies in
grain size and phase distribution from region to region. The addition of T
i and C tended to result in a more homogeneous microstructure, as well as a
refinement in the microstructural scale. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. Al
