Substitution of silicon for iron in R2Fe17 compounds yields a decrease of t
he cell volume, conversely a huge increase of the Curie temperature is obse
rved up to x approximate to 3. The hydrogenation properties of the R2Fe17-x
Six compounds with R=Ce, Nd, show a marked reduction of the maximum hydroge
n uptake related directly to the Si substitution rate. Magnetisation analys
is allows to correlate the cell parameter expansion of the Ce2Fe17-xSix ser
ies to the interstitial site occupation. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All
