Bacillus subtilis cwlD and dacB mutants produce spore peptidoglycan (PG) wi
th increased cross-linking but with little change in spore core hydration c
ompared to the wild type. A cwlD dacB double mutant produced spores with a
two- to fourfold greater increase in PG cross-linking and novel muropeptide
s containing glycine residues but no significant changes in spore resistanc
e or core hydration.
