The effect of dairy effluents on survival and feeding energetics of the com
mon carp Cyprinus carpio were studied. At a concentration of 35% effluent 1
00% mortality was recorded within 24 hr; no mortality occurred at 10% withi
n 96 hr exposure. Concentration of 25% effluent was found as median lethal
concentration at 96 hr exposure. Rearing the fish in increasing sublethal c
oncentrations of dairy effluent (2.5 and 5%) food consumption of fish incre
ased. (From 305.72 +/- 18.03 mg/g to 404.595 +/- 8.36 mg/g live fish at 2.5
% and 395.82 +/- 11.55 mg/g live fish at 5% respectively). However, the gro
wth rate and conversion efficiency registered:a marked reduction.
