Abstract
A generalization of the Talbot effect to the case of a tapered gradient-ind ex medium for nonuniform and uniform illumination is considered. Self-image positions are changed by a function depending on the taper profile, the il lumination, and the periodic object. An analogy with the conventional lens- imaging formula for both types of illumination is presented. (C) 1999 Optic al Society of America [S0740-3232(99)01010-8].
