Abstract
We investigate the numerical instability of a finite-difference beam-propag ation formulation applied to tapered optical waveguides, and we find that i nstability may occur with the use of conventional transparent boundary cond itions. We suggest modified transparent boundary conditions to remove the i nstability by controlling the amount of outgoing energy flux from waveguide structures. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
