Abstract
A new concept is introduced whereby thermal stresses generated through the pumping process are canceled by an applied force. By use of a Nd:YVO4 disk laser as a model system, significant reduction of thermal lensing and defor mation is demonstrated as a function of applied pressure, and the output po wer (19 W TEM00) is limited only by the available pump power.
