D. Seifarth et al., Successful treatment of a morphea plaque localised near the accessory longsaphenous vein by sclerotherapy, PHLEBOLOGIE, 28(1), 1999, pp. 23-26
A 65-year-old patient with chronic venous insufficiency of a lateral tribut
ary of the long saphenous vein with non-improvable chronic venous insuffici
ency of the left leg was treated with sclerotherapy using NaJ (Varigloban (
R) 4%) and Polidocanol (Aethoxyethol (R) 3%). At the side of the affected a
rea on the left thigh a sclerotic, deeply indurated morphea plaque (localis
ed scleroderma) was present. After the successful treatment of the venous i
nsufficiency by sclerotherapy the morphea plaque improved as well, and disa
ppeared completely within six weeks. These observations suggest, that impro
vement of local factors by sclerotherapy may also lead to an improvement of
morphea. Further research is warranted to evaluate the exact mechanism by
which local factors may contribute to the pathogenesis and course of morphe
a.
