In this work we study the structure of electromagnetic interactions and ele
ctric charge quantization in gauge theories of electroweak interactions bas
ed on semisimple groups. We show that in the standard model of electroweak
interactions the structure of electromagnetic interactions is strongly corr
elated to the quantization pattern of electric charges. We examine these tw
o questions also in all possible chiral bilepton gauge models of electrowea
k interactions. In all, we can explain the vectorlike nature of electromagn
etic interactions and electric charge quantization together demanding nonva
nishing fermion masses and anomaly cancellations. [S0556-2821(99)04917-6].
