A metabolite, 6-pentyl-alpha-pyrone (6PAP), with antibiotic properties, der
ived from species of Trichoderma, has been analysed by a rapid ethyl acetat
e extraction technique and determined quantitatively by HPLC, The procedure
described is suitable for the selection of effective antagonist Trichoderm
a strains based on 6PAP production. A strong correlation is shown between t
he amount of pyrone produced and the ability of some Trichoderma strains to
inhibit mycelial growth of Botrytis cinerea, The inhibitory effect of 6PAP
on the germination of conidia of B. cinerea is also demonstrated. Copyrigh
