Dg. Angeler, On the systematic position of Astasia tortuosa (Stokes) Popova, incl. A-tortuosa var. harrisii (E.G. Pringsheim) Angeler stat. nov. (Euglenophyta), PHYTON AUST, 39(1), 1999, pp. 27-35
The rare euglenoid flagellate Astasia tortuosa (STOKES) POPOVA (Euglenaceae
) has been found for the first time in Austria recently. This study highlig
hts the current confusion concerning the systematic position and designatio
n of this species to the genera Menoidium, Astasia or Rhabdomonas. Based on
detailed light microscopical examinations and comparison with cultures of
Menoidium and Astasia, the transfer of M. tortuosum to the genus Astasia by
POPOVA seems to be justified. Astasia tortuosa var. harrisii (E. G. PRINGS
HEIM) ANGELER stat. nov. (A. harrisii E. G. PRINGSHEIM) is classified as a
new variety.
