A case of pleural lymphoma that developed after an episode of empyema is de
scribed. This may be a variant presentation of the rare yet distinct condit
ion termed pyothorax-associated lymphoma. This condition was first recognis
ed in Japan; there have been only a few reports in Western countries to dat
e. A feature of this case is the relatively short interval between diagnosi
s of empyema and subsequent development of lymphoma.
