Abstract
This paper reviews data supporting a genetic basis for bipolar disorder. Mo st of the evidence comes from research in genetic epidemiology. This type o f investigations include family, twin, and adoption studies. The molecular data proposing a single gene as a causative agent, as well as those genes t hat are assocciated with the disorder were reviewed. These genes are called "candidate" and represent an increased risk for developing this disorder.
