Abstract
Astaxanthin was synthesized from beta-carotene by the membrane-bound e nzyme fraction prepared from a unicellular green alga Haematococcus pl uvialis. Zeaxanthin was identified as one of the possible intermediate s. NADPH addition and O-2 supply were essential for the conversion. A monooxygenase inhibitor, tetcyclacis blocked the astaxanthin formation .
