Abstract
This paper shows how systems science can clarify the debate and outline the basic differences between technology and sustainability. Deconstruction is a process by which the various meanings of a concept are ascertained. It i s used to draw the characteristics of technology and sustainability. Each o f these two concepts is driven by imperatives which are in conflict with ea ch other. The discussion infers how they can be reconciled. Copyright (C) 1 999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
