Abstract
In both title compounds, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7, 8-octahydro3,3,6,6-tetramethylxanth ene-1,8-dione, C17H22O3 (I), and 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydro-3,3,6,6-tetramet hyl-9(2-nitrophenyl)xanthene- 1,8-dione, C23H25NO5, (II), the central ring of the xanthene moiety is planar and the two outer rings are in sofa confor mations. Due to tau conjugation, there is an electron delocalization stretc h. The phenyl ring of the 2-nitrophenyl substituent in (II) is nearly perpe ndicular [89.52(7)degrees] to the xanthene ring system.
