Digested sludges from sewage treatment plants behave as ion exchangers of t
he weak acid type. The apparent pK values of the carboxylic and phenol func
tions, determined by titration, were respectively 6.03 +/- 0.12 and 8.76 +/
- 0.25. These sludges also fixed metal cations and in particular calcium an
d barium ions. The phenol functions gave the most stable complexes.
