M. Aglietta et al., COMPARISON OF THE ELECTRON AND MUON DATA IN EXTENSIVE AIR SHOWERS WITH THE EXPECTATIONS FROM A COSMIC-RAY COMPOSITION AND HADRON INTERACTION-MODEL, Nuovo cimento della Societa italiana di fisica. B, Relativity, classical and statistical physics, 112(2-3), 1997, pp. 139-147
The cosmic-ray primary spectrum and composition ape studied at E-0 > 1
0(14) eV by means of the multicomponent Extensive Air Shower detector
of the EAS-TOP experiment at the National Gran Sasso Laboratories. The
measured muon lateral distribution function (E-mu > 1 GeV) and the N-
e-N-mu relation in the energy range around the knee of the primary ene
rgy spectrum (E-0 approximate to 3.10(15)eV) are compared with the exp
ectations of a simulation based on the Dual Parton Model (CORSIKA code
) and a cosmic-ray composition model based on the extrapolations of th
e low-energy direct measurements. First data obtained for vertical sho
wers show that both average values and fluctuations are well reproduce
d. The same interaction model together with mixed compositions, not re
quiring dramatic changes, fit the data also above the knee (up to E-0
approximate to 10(15) eV.
