The deep pool reactor (DPR) is an extremely simple and safe reactor. It cou
ld be used as a heat source for seawater desalination due to its appropriat
e power size and temperature of heat supply. This paper will cover its main
design features, safety analyses and economic performance. A simple, safe
and low-cost nuclear plant coupled with a LT-MED low-temperature desalinati
on process will decrease the cost of fresh water produced compared to other
heat-only reactor systems. This will substantially favor the penetration o
f nuclear energy into the seawater desalination market and global environme
ntal protection.
