Studies of anorectal physiology and in-vivo experiments on the innerva
tion of the anorectum have provided considerable information about ano
rectal function. Additional information regarding the receptors and ne
rves involved in the control of the internal anal sphincter function h
as been obtained from in-vitro studies of isolated muscle strips of th
e internal anal sphincter.
