Abstract
As the amount of sugarcane harvested green in Australia grows, there is an increasing amount of trash brought into the mill. This has a major impact o n the Australian industry resulting, for a typical sugar mill, in a loss of production of around 6,500 tonnes of sugar per annum. This argues for furt her research to quantify these numbers, assess overall costs, and consider changes to the cane payment system that would allow the introduction of can e cleaning technologies for the benefit of all sections of the industry.
