The hydrogen bonding, miscibility, and thermal stability of polyamide tough
ened novolac type phenolic resin were investigated. The intermolecular forc
e of the resin increased with the content of the soft segments of polyamide
s (nylon 6, nylon 66) that absorb the loads in the network of brittle pheno
lic resin. IR (IR region) spectra and differential scanning calorimetry res
ults confirmed that the phenolic/polyamide blend was completely miscible. I
ts thermal degradation temperature was higher than 400 degrees C and increa
sed with the increasing of polyamide content. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, I
