High-spin states of the Te-117 nucleus were studied by in-beam gamma-ray sp
ectroscopy with the Rh-103(O-18,p3n) fusion-evaporation reaction at a beam
energy of 85 MeV. gamma-gamma coincidence and gamma-gamma angular correlati
on analyses were employed for determining the level scheme of Te-117. The p
reviously known states based on the nu h(11/2) orbital have been widely ext
ended and some states have been corrected. Based on the TRS calculations, m
any unusually low-lying states in their excitation energies have been assig
ned to noncollective oblate states built on various quasiparticle configura
tions with beta(2) approximate to 0.17 and gamma = 60 degrees. Meanwhile, i
n the positive-parity states built on the nu g(7/2)[413]5/2(+) and the nu d
(5/2)[402]5/2(+) configurations, the vibrational- and the rotational struct
ures have been found to coexist. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights
