Abstract
Reduction of the lifetime of metastable states in a gas discharge determine d by reabsorption of radiation is analyzed. A particular calculation of dec ay rates of metastable levels by the radiation mechanism and due to electro n collisions is carried out for neon. Conditions in which the first mechani sm is an order of magnitude more efficient than the second one and diffusio n to the walls are found.
