The freshwater species of Vaucheria (Tribophyceae, Chrysophyta) from Connecticut

Having scoured freshwater habitats throughout Connecticut for more than two years at 151 collection sites, we have discovered the presence of nine spe cies and two varieties of the genus Vaucheria, including four species not p reviously known from the state: V. prona, V. taylorii, V. uncinata, and V. undulata. In addition, V. compacta, normally found in local estuaries, is r eported in freshwater here, and is distinguished from its local freshwater variety, V. compacta var, dulcis. Culture conditions in the laboratory stim ulated production of gametangia, allowing for identification of mostly vege tative field-collected samples. A key to the species and varieties is provi ded.
