The boiling interface in a misaligned two-phase mechanical seal is ana
lyzed using a complete thermohydrodynamic approach that requires compl
ex simultaneous iterative solutions of the nonaxisymmetric heat transf
er and phase-change problems. It is shown that under certain operating
conditions, characterized by a modified Sommerfeld number, several ap
proximate solutions with various levels of simplification can be utili
zed to calculate the boiling radius.
