Abstract
A stable carbene (1) interacts strongly with [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+) to form a par amagnetic charge transfer complex, which reverts to its components upon tre atment with air. Absorption spectra and cyclic voltammetric studies confirm that carbene 1 reduces to [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+) to a lower oxidation level in t he complex.
