The Breit-Pauli R-matrix codes are utilized in a detailed study of the phot
oionization of the ground state of Fe XVI (2s(2)2p(6)3s(2)S(1/2)). High res
olution total and partial cross sections an obtained using 37 J pi configur
ation interaction type wavefunctions to represent the residual ion, Fe XVII
, after 3s, 2p and 3s photoionization. For the total cross section, the wor
k of Verner et al, and previous Opacity Project calculations are in fair ag
reement with the present results, while relativistic effects are seen to ha
ve a noticeable but not an overly significant effect on the background cros
s section. The derived partial cross sections are used in a calculation of
rates for the recombination of states of Fe SW to the ground state of Fe XV
I.
