In connection with the 275th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences
, a brief review is presented of the works performed in a new branch of sci
ence-physicochemical mechanics. These works were carried out by P.A. Rehbin
der and members of his scientific school, both at the Institute of Physical
Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences and at the Department of Chem
istry at Moscow State University, in collaboration with other scientific ce
nters and industry. The essential results of the experimental, theoretical,
and applied investigations are highlighted for two main directions in phys
icochemical mechanics: study of the effect of a surface-active medium on th
e mechanical properties of solids and materials, and the development of new
ways of producing materials and disperse systems with required structure a
nd mechanical (rheological) properties. The priority character of these inv
estigations, both in Russian and world science, is noted. At the same time,
this review is dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Department of Chem
istry at Moscow State University.
