Mixed insoluble monolayers of anionic fluorocarbon amphiphile (C8F17COOH) a
nd anionic hydrocarbon amphiphile (C(18)H(37)SO(3)NA) were investigated by
means of a Langmuir balance, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and friction for
ce microscopy (FFM). pi-A curves and topographic images of monolayers were
provided. These pictures and data provide strong experimental evidence for
two-dimensional phase separation and crystallization. Further studies from
the viewpoints of thermodynamics and molecular dynamics were conducted. An
explanation and a mechanism for the observations is suggested. (C) 1999 Els
