This review presents a historical perspective of Fe-S cluster biochemistry,
ranging from the first identification of the Fe-S core, through the elucid
ation of their biological diversity of structure and function, to more rece
nt considerations of the pathways of assembly and disassembly. The latter i
n particular is discussed in the context of biological utility in the regul
