Abstract
The optical response of a nematic liquid crystal under the oscillatory shea r is studied. The nematic liquid crystal is bounded by substrates with stro ng homeotropic and weak planar coupling (hybrid orientation). The critical oscillation amplitude above which the director on a substrate with weak cou pling deviates from the planar orientation is determined, and the surface e nergy W is evaluated to be approximate to 3.7 x 10(-6) N/m. IL
