Abstract
The complete sequence of the bacterium Thermotoga maritima genome has revea led a large fraction of genes most closely related to those of archaeal spe cies. This adds to the accumulating evidence that lateral gene transfer is a potent evolutionary force in prokaryotes, though questions of its magnitu de remain.
