S. Kurz et S. Russenschuk, The application of the BEM-FEM coupling method for the accurate calculation of fields in superconducting magnets, ELECTRI ENG, 82(1), 1999, pp. 1
The design and optimization of the superconducting dipole magnets for the L
arge Hadron Collider (LHC), is dominated by the requirement of an extremely
uniform field. With the application of the BEM-FEM coupling method, the fi
eld problem is decomposed into the calculation of the source vector potenti
al, and the reduced vector potential resulting from iron magnetization. The
numerical errors do not influence the dominating contribution from the sup
erconducting coil and the surrounding air region needs not to be meshed. Th
is simplifies the preprocessing and avoids artificial boundary conditions a
t some "far" boundaries.
