Abstract
The present study confirms international studies which have shown that an i ncreased body mass index is associated mainly with higher Fat intake and wi th lower sugar intake per energy unit (1000 kcal) supplied. Many of the dif ferences observed seem to be due to different consumption patterns and to d ifferent foods consumed. Prospective cohort studies, furthermore, will he a means of studying the ri me between cause and effect more thoroughly These studies will be che basis for more reliable recommendations of fat and sugar intake.
