Vs. Volkova, Palinostratigraphy of quaternary deposits of the Yamal and Taz Peninsulas (problems of the Pliocene), GEOL GEOFIZ, 40(8), 1999, pp. 1119-1134
The first palinological characteristics of deposits (up to 400 m thick) fro
m the Yamal and Taz Peninsulas are given. The palinostratigraphy of the dep
osits is substantiated according to the successive changes in structure of
flora formations. The palinological characteristics of Upper Pliocene and L
ower, Middle, and Upper Pleistocene deposits are described. It is shown tha
t Upper Pliocene river sediments occur in overdeepened valleys at depths of
250-370 m. Correlation is made between the Arctic Pliocene and the Pliocen
e of the southern areas of West Siberia and the Timan-Uralian region. Corre
lation between the Pliocene of the Yamal Peninsula and that of the Timan-Ur
alian region requires paleomagnetic evidence. It is suggested that the sedi
ments in the overdeepened valleys of the Ob' River are coeval with those of
the Bitekei Horizon. The genesis and age of the Lower-Middle Pleistocene d
eposits and their palinostratigraphy are still under discussion. It has bee
n established that the Yamal and Taz Peninsulas lack Oligocene and Miocene
deposits and thick Pliocene and Quaternary deposits occur on Paleocene and
Eocene marine sediments.
