With the CPC Merged Analysis of Precipitation (CMAP) and a gridded dataset
based on the TOGA-COARE IOP in-situ soundings, we study the convective acti
vities in the Indian Ocean-western Pacific sector. Three basic modes of cum
ulus heating and drying, extracted by a Rotated Principal Component Analysi
s (RPCA), are identified to be associated with convective types that appear
under different large-scale conditions. The result underlines the importan
ce of considering various modes of cumulus heating and drying in developing
a cumulus parameterization scheme.
