The eddy current loss in the thrust rod of an iron-cored, 2-phase, tubular
permanent magnet brushless motor is investigated by time-stepped transient
finite element analysis. It is shown that the dominant cause of the loss is
the permeance modulation which results from the teeth in the laminated thr
ust block, whose spacing is the same as the magnet pole-pitch. Loss predict
ions are validated by measurements.
