Abstract
The alkaline hydrolysis of gossypiline (1), a lignan constituent of Jatroph a gossypifolia afforded a diol (2) which on treatment with MnO2 yielded iso gadain (3). Reactions of isogadain (3) with DDQ and NBS produced justicidin E (4) and taiwanin C (5) respectively.
