Mathematical models representing the static rolling process have attracted
considerable attention in the past, resulting in analytical, numerical, or
graphical solutions obtained under various degrees of simplification and co
nstraints. Most models, however, can only be used under steady conditions,
and therefore are not suitable for the study of rolling chatter. An enhance
d analytical process model that can handle dynamic variations exerted by ro
ll vibrations in multiple directions is proposed in this paper, and its lin
earized form established for easy analysis. Finally, experiments are presen
ted that verify the accuracy of the proposed dynamic model of the rolling p
rocess. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
