The complexity created by applying the inhomogeneous deformation concept to
the rolling process has been so overwhelming that, up to date, it was used
only for the modeling of the static process. In order to study the chatter
phenomena in rolling, however, a rolling process model with time-varying c
onditions is required. A new dynamic rolling process model that utilizes th
e inhomogeneous deformation concept and is capable of accounting for the in
fluence of roll movements is presented in this paper. Finally, a brief disc
ussion regarding the coupling of a suitable unsteady lubrication model, onc
e developed, to the proposed inhomogeneous process model is given. (C) 1999
