The current state of what is known about bulk, surface (Rayleigh), and inte
rfacial (Stoneley) waves in infinite and semi-infinite anisotropic linear e
lastic solids is surveyed. Features of wave propagation which are not usual
ly presented or even found in treatments involving purely isotropic solids
are discussed, and the use of the so-called Stroh formalism for treating ce
rtain plane problems of steady wave propagation is reviewed. (C) 1999 Elsev
