Abstract
The history of automotive refinishing paints begins at the turn of the cent ury; with the traditional coach varnishes based on natural resins. Consider able progress has been made over the course of rime. Nitrocellulose lacquer s came Go-solvent onto the market in 1925, followed a few years later by al kyd resins. The latter were applied initially by brushing. It was knot unti l about 1940 that sprayable alkyd resins which dry by oxidation were first used. From about 1950, the short-oil and nitrocellulose lacquers were repla ced increasingly by medium-oil alkyd resins.
