Abstract
The uses of liquid helium I, liquid helium II and gaseous helium near its c ritical point in experimental investigations are emerging as an important b ranch of modem fluid dynamics. This paper is an attempt to review the use o f liquid helium in research on stability, transition and turbulence. Emphas is is made on the contributions of W F Vinen to turbulence studies in heliu m II.
